I don't know how much you guys know about burning .avi videos to DVD, but I've been really frustrated lately. First of all, the amount of time it takes to transcode and burn one movie is like, eight hours. And even then, when I go to play the disc on several different DVD players and computers, it's all screwed up! I've been trying to burn my SPN Season 3 episodes for WEEKS, and they never turn out right. I watched the files themselves, and though there are a few flaws here and there, overall, they're fine. But the DVD's are all screwed up -- digitized pictures, skipping, freezing, the sound completely off track with the picture. It's driving me NUTS. I really need to get some of this crap off my external hard drive, but I don't want to keep wasting blank DVD's, you know?
Any advice? Oh, and for reference sake, I'm using NeroVision 4 for both the transcoding and burning, and I have had plenty of successes with it, but it seems totally hit and miss as to what will burn and what won't.
Oh, and a more specific question: could doing other tasks while burning effect the quality of the DVD? For instance, if I watch a YouTube or some other video, or if the virus protector is running, could that mess things up?

Thank you to all my friends who contributed to the discussion yesterday. I've compiled a list of movies people mentioned
Lost Boys 3
Near Dark 3
NightBreed 3
28 Days Later 2
Candyman 2
Langella's Dracula 2
Shaun of the Dead 2
The Company of Wolves 2
So the ones I've struck are ones I've seen and/or own (Langella was my first movie Dracula love, after all, and I think I've seen Lost Boys about 80 billion times.), although I do want to see Candyman again, as I love and adore horror mainstay Tony Todd. Shaun of the Dead is in my collection, but I haven't watched it yet, and the others are now on my list to see next.
One of the things I found most interesting about this conversation, and I believe
rilee16 brought it up: everybody's definition of "horror" is different. Some people like scary/funny, some people like to be grossed out, some people like to have their brain screwed. It's such a tricky genre because it covers so much storytelling ground. If a story is scary, does that automatically make it "horror"? A lot of people in the thread didn't think something like Jaws counted as horror, even though it was scary as shit, or gross, or what have you. I don't really consider Lost Boys "horror" for reasons I find difficult to articulate -- not scary to me? Some people mentioned they consider Alien SciFi, and NOT horror, although it's often listed as a monster flick.
So I've got a few new ones to check out, that should occupy my desire for scary movies for a bit. I recently saw... Saw... the movie named Saw, I viewed it. I thought it was scary as hell with lots of grody twists and turns. I can't imagine the unending sequels are even close to as scary, and I've heard they get gorier and gorier. My gore level is surprisingly low for a horror fan. But if the gore is part of the suspense, then I'm with you. I remember being a teenager and renting all of the Faces of Death movies. I don't even know if they're around anymore. They were horrific, and left me with nightmares for weeks. The thing about them was -- they weren't fiction -- they were films of actual people and animals dying in often really horrible ways. No holds barred. There were some things in those flicks I wouldn't describe here because they were just... horrific, on a fundamental human level. I don't know that I could watch them again at this point in my life, but back then it was like daring ourselves to stare into an abyss that we didn't even really believe in yet. I remember everybody being really quiet through most of them. Someone even left to get sick at one point. But we watched them all, and I don't think we were ever the same.
Sometimes fictional movies cross those ick lines too, for me. But I couldn't possibly tell you where those lines are unless I see them. For example, the only time I ever got sick (when I wasn't drunk) during a movie was Langella's 1973 Dracula (one of my very favorites), when he breaks Renfield's neck. Seriously -- when I saw it as a kid, I totally tossed my popcorn over that moment. I have a hard time with bones breaking, especially through the skin. It's a squick I've learned to get by, but it still makes me make that "Bleurgh" face that says I might yak. Now, that's horror, right? I'm horrified by that sound, that sensation -- isn't that what I'm seeking by seeing horror? So... shouldn't I go for those trigger-y things if I want to really be scared?
I don't know, because there's a line between "need to go get therapy" horror, and "Whee! I was so scared I almost pissed myself" horror. The second is the kind I like to seek out. I love to be scared, I love to be shocked, I love a good story twist. In recent years, I've found I seek out movies that freak me out, but not necessarily in that triggery way. The Top Eight horror (and I'm not even touching vamp movies here, because I LOVE THEM ALL (except fucking TWILIGHT) and count them as a category all their own. No particular order:
* Final Destination -- Death is the one thing I'm REALLY terrified of, and this movie left me thinking about death constantly for weeks. Second guessing everything I did in a "Wow, I could totally die right now" kind of way.
* The Blair Witch Project -- only scary once, but DUDE that basement scene kept me above ground for MONTHS afterward.
* The Grudge - THOSE CREEPY FREAKY SCARY KIDS MAKE ME REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE
* The Ring - See above. I suspect Asian horror might be too much for me, but I'll give it an earnest try. *G*
* The Hitcher - the 80's version w/Rutger Hower scared the SHIT out of me.
* Invasion of the Body Snatchers (70's version) - THAT DOG! I have nightmares with that hideous, freaky dog to this day.
* The Stepfather -- I was so happy to see this on the second list, because that movie (starring the actor who plays Locke on Lost) made me fear Camptown Races for a very long time.
* The Hearse -- much better (imo) than Christine
I know there are more, but those are the only ones I can think of right now!
I'm just crossing out ones I've seen on this list.
